Business records of the Mixter family and the Knight family, 1793-1905 (inclusive).

The principal business activity of the Mixter and Knight families of Hardwick, Mass. was the operation of a general store, and the account books of this business form the bulk of the collection. The firm operated under various names: Warner and Mixter (1793-1803); Jason Mixter (1803-ca. 1845); Mixter and Delano (ca. 1839-1850); Gorham and Knight (1850-1856); Albert E. Knight (1853-1903); F.L. Sturtevant (1894-1896). The ledgers and daybooks are nearly complete; there are also accounts of bills receivable and payable; team books; and weigh books. Mixter and Delano also engaged in the "farming out" of palm leaf hats. The collection also includes records for several other business and civic activities: dairy accounts, 1861-1868, of George Mixter; daybook, 1866-1869, of Edward Denny and Company, wool factory in Barre Plains, Mass.; accounts, 1833-1847, of Bush and Delano for making palm leaf hats; minute book, 1851-1853, of the Ware River Railroad, Ware, Mass.; postmaster accounts, 1892-1905, of Herbert E. Emmons and Harrison Spencer; daybook, 1839-1844, of Ingalls Kittredge, Sr., a physician of Beverly, Mass.; ledger, 1842, of Silas Perry, a blacksmith; ledger, 1877-1902, of George E. Morse, a blacksmith; estate account book, 1859-1864, of Spencer Field; and accounts, 1867-1878, of Albert E. Knight, collector and treasurer for the town of Hardwick.
